Guide :Ice Cream Makers : 8550-X 5 Quart Ice Cream Maker

I purchased a rival ice cream maker. I used it once and the ice cream came out great. The next time I used it the paddle didn't turn and the ice cream and paddle was frozen to the sides of the can. The ice cream in the middle wasn't frozen. I noticed when you try to turn the canister by hand it won't budge, but it turns ok when plugged in. Can you tell me what's wrong. My freezer is #8550-X. The tub turns around the dasher(paddle). You live in a high humid area... to much ice and salt around outside. Plus you need to age the ice cream a few hours after mixing. See your book.

Recently bought a used Taylor Shake/Slush Freezer Model 430 to be used for shakes. It was used for aheks in the past and no problems, however, we put it together and the ice cream is too hard. Even getting frozen chunks in the top reservoir, and eventually ice cream even becoming difficult to get out. Had to shut off before the motor went out. Other symptoms include a brief clunk, clunk, clunk noise after it is on for a little while. This does stop. Also, I understand a little bit of leakage in the drip tray, but more than I think should be taking place. We have the thermistor control turned all the way to the left, counter clockwise, which is supposed to make a thinner product. It was last used to make margaritas. Is there some setting we could be missing? Missing part? Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

The Taylor 430 thermistor model has two adjustments a fine adjustment, which is made by turning the knob, and a coarse adjustment that is made by turning the screw in the center of the knob. I suspect you are trying the fine adjustment, which will change the product + or - 2 degrees F. The coarse adjustment will let you set the product temperature between 10 and 30 degrees F. As far as the clunking, those machines clunk a little. It would do it more if the product was too hard. You are correct the machine will leak drops into the drip tray, but if it is more than drops, you want to address it. Should be as simple as a new tune up kit. The paddle in my new 1.5 L ice cream maker is not turning - is this normal?

Hello Maryo803, It is not normal for the paddle not to move in these units. First we have to determine weather the paddle is striped or the gear is stripped. At the bottom of the paddle there is a hole that attaches to the turning gear on the machine. Look and see if it still matches the sprocket in the bottom of the ice cream maker. If it does not still match I would suggest buying a new paddle. You can purchase a new paddle from Cuisinart for $8.00 and here is a link to the page. http://www.cuisinart.com/parts/ice_cream/ice-20.html However, if it is not the paddle please post back to this thread and I will see if it is worth changing out the bottom gear. Thank you for choosing FIxYa.com Justin

Over freezing ice cream....

Any water is going to solidify the mixture. Make sure you use heavy whipping cream, and not half-and-half or some other substitute. As far as the mixture freezing onto freezer bowl - use the supplied spatula to try to scrape it off, but I generally have to count that portion out as lost. Running warm water over it will quickly wash it off. Happy mixing! -Tha Mp3 Doctor

Cuisinart Ice Cream Freezer Bowls Not Freezing Anymore

I would take the freezer bowls out of the freezer, run them both under the sink to thaw both bowls out, dry both bowls thoroughly, and then set them both on the counter so that the liquid settles toward the bottom of the freezer bowls. After 1 hour, place the bowls FLAT back into the freezer - don't forget to wrap them in a plastic grocery bag or some other sort of plastic bag. Try to make ice cream again after 24 hours or more of freezing. Let me know if this works, so I can pass the good news along to others.
